Worshiping in Truth

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Worship God

Scripture: God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. – John 4:24 (KJV)

Worship that is ‘in truth’ is worship that is aligned with the revealed Word of God. While music can move our emotions and community can stir our hearts, true worship must be anchored in the objective reality of who God is as revealed in Scripture. If our worship is only about how we feel, it will evaporate as soon as our feelings change. But when our worship is grounded in the truth—the truth of the Cross, the truth of His holiness, and the truth of His sovereignty—it remains a solid, unwavering response to our King.

As you worship today, pay attention to the lyrics you sing and the prayers you pray. Ask yourself: ‘Is this focused on God’s unchanging truth?’ Let the reality of what Scripture says about Him direct your praise. Don’t rely on the atmosphere of the room to create your worship; rely on the Spirit of God to illuminate the truth of who He is. When you worship in truth, you are anchored in something that no circumstance can change.

Prompt: Is your corporate worship today grounded in the objective truth of Scripture, rather than just emotional experience?

Action Step: True Christian worship requires engaging both our genuine, spiritual devotion and our minds focused on the truth of who God is.
