Understanding Servanthood

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Equip

Scripture: For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. – Mark 10:45 (KJV)

The spirit of the age is to be served, to be recognized, and to have our own preferences prioritized. The spirit of the Kingdom is exactly the opposite: the Son of Man, the King of Kings, came to serve. When we shift our focus from what we are ‘owed’ to what we can ‘give,’ we begin to walk in the true power of the Gospel. True leadership and true maturity are found in the lowliness of the towel and the basin, not in the status of the throne.

Where are you feeling entitled or frustrated that your needs aren’t being met? Use that frustration as a signal to pivot. Instead of seeking to be served, look for one person you can bless today—whether through a kind word, a task performed, or a sacrifice of your own time. When you serve as Jesus did, you are not losing your life; you are finding the true meaning of it.

Prompt: In what area of your life do you need to shift from expecting to be served to actively serving others?

Action Step: The Equip module trains us to adopt the mindset of Christ, who humbly served those He led.

Next Step: Look for one hidden or lowly task you can perform today to serve your family or coworkers.
