Total Depravity
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Theology
Scripture: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; – Romans 3:23 (KJV)
The doctrine of total depravity is not meant to demean us, but to magnify the sufficiency of Christ’s work. When we grasp that every part of our being—our will, our desires, our thoughts—has been tainted by sin, we finally understand why we could never ‘work’ our way to heaven. We didn’t just need a moral improvement; we needed a resurrection. Recognizing our complete inability to save ourselves is the vital first step toward truly worshipping the One who did the impossible on our behalf.
Take time today to sit in the tension of your own brokenness and His boundless grace. The deeper you understand the gravity of your sin, the more breathtaking His forgiveness becomes. Instead of trying to convince yourself you are ‘basically good,’ stand in the light of His truth and marvel at the cost of your salvation. It is from this place of humility that genuine gratitude flows.
Prompt: How does understanding the depth of human sinfulness increase your appreciation for the magnitude of God’s grace?
Action Step: Theology addresses essential doctrines, teaching that sin has thoroughly affected human nature, making salvation by grace absolutely necessary.
Next Step: Thank God today that your salvation relies entirely on His grace, not your own merit.
