The Sovereignty of God

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Theology

Scripture: But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. – Psalm 115:3

The sovereignty of God is the ultimate anchor for the believer’s soul. When we realize that our God is in the heavens and does whatever He pleases, we are freed from the crushing weight of trying to control an uncontrollable world. Sovereignty does not mean that every circumstance is ‘good’ by human standards, but it does mean that every circumstance passes through the filter of His perfect will. Nothing escapes His notice, and nothing can thwart His ultimate redemptive purposes.

If you are currently facing circumstances that feel chaotic or painful, find rest in this truth: you are not a victim of chance but a child of the Sovereign King. Your life is not spinning out of control, because God is the one holding the reins. When you acknowledge His sovereignty, your anxiety begins to yield to a steady, quiet trust. You can face the unknown with confidence, knowing that the One who is in control is also the One who loves you with an everlasting love.

Prompt: How does knowing that God is in complete control change the way you view your current circumstances?

Action Step: The doctrine of God’s sovereignty assures us that nothing happens outside of His divine authority.

Next Step: Write down a current worry and intentionally surrender it to God’s sovereign control.
