The Omniscience of God

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Theology

Scripture: O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. – Psalm 139:1-2

The omniscience of God can be a daunting thought if we imagine a distant judge keeping a ledger of our failures. But for the child of God, the fact that He knows our ‘downsitting and uprising’ is the ultimate comfort. It means we are never hidden, never forgotten, and never misunderstood. Even when we cannot articulate our own internal chaos, He understands our thoughts from afar. He knows the secret longings, the hidden anxieties, and the silent cries that no one else can perceive.

Rest in the truth that you are fully known and yet fully loved. You do not have to explain yourself to Him; He sees past your mistakes to the heart that seeks Him. Knowing that He is present in every detail of your life transforms your solitude into communion. You are under the constant caring gaze of the One who loves you more than you know and there is nowhere you can go that His understanding love cannot reach you.

Prompt: How does knowing that God sees and understands everything about you bring comfort?

Action Step: Theology teaches us that God’s omniscience means He is never surprised by our struggles.

Next Step: Read Psalm 139 and meditate on God’s perfect knowledge of you.
