The Old Covenant
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Theology
Scripture: In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. – Hebrews 8:13 (KJV)
The Old Covenant—the Law and the temple system—served as a ‘tutor’ or schoolmaster to show us our need for a Savior. It was a holy standard that highlighted human inability, demonstrating that no amount of animal sacrifice or moral effort could bridge the chasm between a sinful people and a holy God. Without the Old Covenant, we might mistakenly believe we are ‘good enough’ on our own. When we see the beauty and the weight of the Law, we can finally grasp the staggering grace of the New Covenant, where the sacrifice is complete and the barrier is removed.
Today, reflect on the holiness of God that the Law demands. It was meant to create a hunger in us for something better—for the righteousness that comes only by faith. By understanding the ‘old’ way, you will find your heart swelling with gratitude for the ‘new’ way: the direct access to the Father you enjoy through the blood of Christ.
Prompt: How does understanding the purpose of the Old Covenant help you appreciate the grace of the New Covenant?
Action Step: Sound Theology teaches that the Old Covenant reveals God’s perfect standard and our need for a Savior.
Next Step: Thank God that you are justified by faith in Christ, not by the works of the law.
