The Holiness of God

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Theology

Scripture: Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. – 1 Peter 1:16

Holiness is often misunderstood as a grim list of ‘thou-shalt-nots,’ but at its core, it is the radiant, matchless beauty of God’s own character. To contemplate His holiness is to stand before the sun—it reveals our imperfections but also shows us the standard we were created to reach. God calls us to be holy precisely because He is holy; it is a call to be separated from the decay of sin and restored to our intended glory. Pursuit of holiness is not an attempt to earn God’s love, but a response to the wonder of His nature.

When you feel the pull toward compromise stop and fix your gaze on the purity of the Lord. His holiness is not a barrier to relationship but the environment in which true life flourishes. As you meditate on His perfection ask Him to imprint His values onto your own. Holiness is simply becoming more like Him—and there is no higher or more beautiful ambition for a disciple of Jesus.

Prompt: How does contemplating the absolute purity and perfection of God inspire you to pursue holiness?

Action Step: God’s holiness is the standard for our lives; He calls us to be set apart for His purposes.

Next Step: Identify one habit that does not reflect God’s holiness and surrender it to Him today.
