Teachability

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE

Scripture: Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. – Proverbs 9:9

Teachability is the hallmark of true wisdom. A wise person recognizes that their perspective is limited and that the insight of others is a gift from God. When we become defensive or closed off to correction, we essentially stop growing. Proverbs 9:9 reminds us that the mark of a ‘wise’ and ‘just’ person is the ability to receive instruction and grow from it. Our growth as disciples is not just a vertical process between us and God; it is a horizontal process facilitated by the wisdom God places in the lives of our brothers and sisters.

Take a moment to consider how you respond when you are corrected. Is your immediate instinct to explain yourself or to examine the validity of what is being said? Seek out someone you trust and invite them to speak honestly into your life—perhaps regarding a blind spot or a habit that needs refinement. Being teachable is an act of humility that says you value truth more than your reputation. As you open yourself to the instruction of others you will find yourself increasing in learning and wisdom just as the scripture promises.

Prompt: Are you open to being corrected and taught by others, or do you quickly become defensive?
