Spiritual Direction

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. – Proverbs 3:5-6

Leaning on our own understanding is a comfortable habit, especially when we feel we have the experience to handle a situation. Yet, Proverbs 3:5-6 calls us to a radical surrender—to trust Him with our whole heart, acknowledging that our limited perspective is no match for His divine wisdom. We often get into trouble because we try to force a path forward, rather than waiting for Him to ‘direct our paths.’ Acknowledging Him in all our ways means bringing the decision to His feet before we take the first step.

Identify the situation today where you have been trying to play ‘God’ by force-fitting the outcome. Stop. Admit to the Lord that you do not have the perspective to solve this on your own. Lay your plans down and ask Him for the next step. As you shift from leaning on your brain to leaning on His presence you will find a peace that comes from knowing the Pilot of your life is in control.

Prompt: In what specific situation do you need to stop leaning on your own understanding and trust God for direction?

Action Step: Seeking spiritual direction means intentionally asking God to guide our steps rather than forging our own path.

Next Step: Pause before making your next significant decision today and ask God for His clear direction.
