Speech and Words

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE

Scripture: Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. – Proverbs 18:21 (KJV)

Our words are not mere sounds; they are creative forces that reflect the state of our hearts and shape the environment around us. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that the tongue carries the power of both death and life, meaning our daily conversations have the capacity to heal, uplift, and edify, or to wound, diminish, and destroy. Because we are created in God’s image, our speech should be a reflection of His character—truthful, seasoned with grace, and aimed at the benefit of others.

Take a moment to audit your recent interactions. Are your words characterized by complaints and criticism or by encouragement and life-giving truth? Cultivating a life of wise speech begins with the heart for out of its abundance the mouth speaks. Ask the Holy Spirit to tame your tongue today that the fruit of your words might be a blessing to those you encounter and a reflection of the love of Christ.

Prompt: Are the words you speak daily bringing life and encouragement, or are they tearing others down?

Action Step: SHAPE involves transforming our character, which includes gaining biblical control over our speech.

Next Step: Commit to speaking only words of edification and encouragement to everyone you interact with today.
