Simplicity of Speech

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. – Proverbs 10:19

We often believe that more words equal more influence, but the book of Proverbs teaches that wisdom is frequently found in silence. A ‘multitude of words’ often creates a breeding ground for gossip, pride, and impulsive regret. When we speak without thought, we forfeit the power of restraint. Practicing simplicity of speech is an act of spiritual discipline—it forces us to weigh our words, ensure they are necessary, and confirm they are flavored with grace.

Today challenge yourself to be ‘slow to speak.’ Before you share that opinion correct someone or jump into a conversation pause. Ask yourself: ‘Will this bring life to this situation, or is it just noise?’ By refraining your lips, you create space for God to work and for you to listen more intently. True wisdom is not found in being the loudest person in the room, but in being the one whose words are thoughtfully chosen and profoundly helpful.

Prompt: Do you tend to talk too much or speak before you think?

Action Step: Practicing simplicity of speech helps us avoid unnecessary conflict and sin.

Next Step: Practice listening twice as much as you speak in your conversations today.
