Self-Control

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE

Scripture: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. – Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

Self-control, or temperance, is not a product of human willpower; it is a ‘fruit of the Spirit.’ It is the Holy Spirit’s power governing our impulses, our emotions, and our reactions. When we try to manufacture self-control through our own effort, we often find ourselves brittle and prone to failure. True temperance comes when we yield our desires to the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to replace our reactive nature with His divine composure.

Identify the area where you feel most out of control—perhaps your spending your words your temper or your screen time. Instead of just trying ‘harder ‘ pray for the Spirit’s fruit to manifest in that specific weakness. Invite Him to take the wheel of your impulses today. When you walk in His control, you are not restraining yourself; you are being liberated from the tyranny of your own flesh.

Prompt: What area of your life most desperately needs the Holy Spirit's gift of temperance (self-control) right now?

Action Step: SHAPE involves cultivating the fruit of the Spirit, including the discipline of self-control over our fleshly desires.

Next Step: Identify one habit that lacks self-control and submit it to God in prayer today.
