Sabbath as Resistance

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect

Scripture: And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day. – Deuteronomy 5:15 (KJV)

In Egypt, the Israelites were defined by their output—they were valued only as long as they were working. Sabbath is a direct command from God to stop the cycle of bondage. By resting, we are declaring to the world that our worth is not tied to our productivity, but to our Creator. It is a radical, counter-cultural act of resistance to say, ‘I am a child of God, not a cog in the machine.’

Use your day today to intentionally break the cycle of work. Don’t just ‘stop working’—actively celebrate your freedom in Christ. Engage in activities that nourish your soul, connect with your family, and remind you of your status as a beloved child. By refusing to let your value be measured by your to-do list, you are practicing the freedom for which Christ has set you free.

Prompt: How can your rest today serve as an act of resistance against a culture that values you only for your productivity?

Action Step: Sabbath rest is a declaration of freedom from the relentless demands of the world, acknowledging our identity is found in God, not our work.
