Sabbath and Justice

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect

Scripture: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son… nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant… that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. – Deuteronomy 5:14 (KJV)

The Sabbath is a radical institution because it mandates rest for everyone—regardless of status, rank, or utility. By commanding that even servants and laborers receive rest, God declares that human worth is not tied to productivity, but to being created in His image. When we practice Sabbath, we participate in a rhythm of justice that resists the world’s pressure to use people as mere tools. It is a weekly reminder that God is the defender of the weak and that all people deserve dignity and refreshment.

As you prepare for your Sabbath consider how you can use this day to honor that divine rhythm. Is your rest creating space for others to rest? Are you mindful of those whose lives may be consumed by the work of others? Let your rest be a witness to the freedom and equality found in Christ who invites all the weary to come to Him and find true restorative peace.

Prompt: How does practicing Sabbath rest remind you of God's heart for equality, freedom, and justice for all people?

Action Step: Sabbath rest includes ensuring that our rhythms of rest do not come at the expense of others, but promote liberation.
