Sabbath and Joy

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect

Scripture: If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable… Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD… – Isaiah 58:13-14

Sabbath was never intended to be a legalistic checklist or a burden of ‘do’s and don’ts.’ Isaiah 58 describes it as a ‘delight’—an honorable day where we stop seeking our own pleasure so that we can find our ultimate pleasure in the Lord Himself. If your Sabbath feels like a heavy duty, you may be missing the invitation to simply enjoy your Creator. Sabbath is a day to put down the tools of our own labor and celebrate the finished work of Christ.

Reframe your rest today. Instead of viewing it as a day to avoid certain things view it as a day to lean into the things that bring you into the presence of the Lord. Read a book that stirs your wonder enjoy nature or spend extra time in conversation with your family. Call the Sabbath a delight by aligning your heart with the joy of being His. When you stop striving you create the space to finally taste the goodness of God. Let today be a genuine celebration of your relationship with Him.

Prompt: Is your day of rest characterized by a sense of duty, or a genuine sense of delight and joy in God?
