Sabbath and Family
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect
Scripture: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: – Exodus 20:10 (KJV)
Sabbath is intended to be a shared rhythm of grace. Exodus 20 commands us to extend the rest even to those under our care, acknowledging that rest is a community-wide blessing. When we Sabbath together, we stop the pressure to achieve and instead celebrate the gift of God’s provision. It binds a family together in a way that busy work-weeks never can. It is a declaration that the most important thing we have is our time with God and with one another.
Plan a Sabbath activity today that removes the ‘work’ element for everyone. Go for a walk, share a slow meal, or read together. Make it a ‘no-chore’ zone. By intentionally resting together, you are modeling for your children or friends that their identity is found in being loved by God, not in being productive. Enjoy the gift of one another today without the intrusion of your to-do list.
Prompt: How can you intentionally involve your family or close friends in a shared experience of Sabbath rest today?
Action Step: Sabbath is not just an individual practice; it is designed to bring collective peace and rest to households and communities.
