Reviewing the Rule of Life

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. – Haggai 1:5

The command in Haggai to ‘consider your ways’ is a necessary invitation to audit our lives. As the calendar year ends, it is the perfect time to stop the frantic pace and evaluate whether our daily actions actually match our stated values. A ‘Rule of Life’—our spiritual habits, our disciplines, and our priorities—often drifts over time. We start with good intentions, but life slowly shifts us into reactive behaviors. This is the moment to stop, examine the drift, and make the necessary course corrections to start the new year with purpose.

What habits have you neglected that used to sustain your walk with God? Where have your ‘ways’ departed from the path of discipleship? Don’t look back with regret but look back with wisdom. Identify the rhythms that need to be restored and the habits that need to be released. By considering your ways today you are preparing your heart to be fertile soil for whatever God has in store for the year ahead. Take the time to pray reflect and reset.

Prompt: As the year winds down, is it time to review and adjust your spiritual habits?

Action Step: The Practice section encourages us to periodically evaluate our 'Rule of Life'—our intentional rhythms of spiritual discipline.

Next Step: Review the spiritual goals you set at the beginning of the year and note where you need to adjust.
