Resting the Body

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect

Scripture: And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. – Mark 6:31

Even the disciples, in the midst of the most important work in human history, needed to step back. Jesus knew that they were finite creatures prone to burnout, and that their ‘coming and going’ had become so frantic they had no leisure even to eat. He prioritized rest because He knew that sustainable ministry requires a rested body and a calm mind. Rest is not a luxury or a sign of laziness; it is a recognition that God is the one sustaining the world, not us. We rest to remember that we are creatures, not the Creator.

Today, take Mark 6:31 to heart. If you have been running at a pace that prevents you from even ‘eating’—spiritually or physically—take the invitation to come apart. Disconnect from the noise, find a ‘desert place,’ and allow your body the rest it needs. When you honor the limits of your physical frame, you are practicing trust in God’s sovereignty. Rest well today, knowing that God is still on the throne while you sleep and refresh your spirit for the week ahead.

Prompt: Why did Jesus prioritize physical rest for His disciples, and how can you follow His example today?

Action Step: The Sabbath is a crucial time to allow your physical body to recover from the demands of the week.
