Resting in Christ’s Yoke
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect
Scripture: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. – Matthew 11:28-29
We often think of a ‘yoke’ as a symbol of burden, but in the ancient context, a yoke was a tool that linked two animals together to share a load. When Jesus invites us to take His yoke, He is inviting us to be harnessed to Him. The beauty of His yoke is that He carries the weight of the work; we simply walk in step with His leadership. True rest is not found by running away from our responsibilities, but by performing them in union with Christ.
As you enter your Sabbath, relinquish the need to be the one in control. Submitting to His yoke means acknowledging that His ways are better than yours and that His strength is sufficient for your tasks. If you are ‘heavy laden’ today, stop trying to carry the load alone. Walk beside Him, learn from His meekness, and find that your burden becomes light when shared with the Master. His leadership is not a command to perform; it is an invitation to rest.
Prompt: How does submitting to Christ’s leadership (His yoke) actually bring rest to your soul on this Sabbath?
Action Step: True Sabbath rest is found not just in ceasing activity, but in surrendering control and resting under the gentle authority of Jesus.
