Resting from Ambition
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect
Scripture: It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. – Psalm 127:2 (KJV)
We live in a culture that worships the ‘relentless hustle,’ promising that if we just work longer hours and worry more, we can secure our own future. Psalm 127 calls this a ‘vain’ endeavor, reminding us that it is the Lord who gives to His beloved, even while they sleep. Resting from ambition does not mean abandoning diligence; it means acknowledging that our success, our future, and our security rest in God’s hands, not in our own exhaustion.
Today, practice the act of ‘laying down.’ Intentionally finish your work, turn off your devices, and release your anxieties about your career or your status. Remind yourself that God is working even when you are not. By choosing to rest, you are making a bold statement of faith: you trust the Provider more than you trust your own productivity. Allow yourself the grace of a quiet heart and a peaceful mind, knowing that you are deeply loved by the One who never sleeps.
Prompt: Can you lay down your ambitions and striving today, trusting that God’s provision doesn’t depend solely on your relentless hustle?
Action Step: Sabbath rest requires us to pause our pursuit of success and achievement, acknowledging that God is the true builder of our lives.
