Reflecting on the Spirit

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect

Scripture: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: – Romans 8:16

We often try to validate our identity through our achievements, our reputation, or our possessions. Yet, the deepest truth about us is whispered by the Holy Spirit: we are children of God. Romans 8:16 tells us that the Spirit bears witness with our own spirit, a constant inner affirmation that we are loved, chosen, and adopted. Silence is necessary to hear this witness, because the world is constantly shouting lies about our worth. When we sit in silence, we move from ‘doing’ to ‘being’ in the presence of our Father.

Today find a quiet place to sit with the Lord. Let go of the need to perform or succeed. In the stillness ask the Holy Spirit to settle into your heart and confirm your identity. Let Him drown out the voices of doubt and insecurity. You are a child of God—this is your primary reality. Rest in this truth today and let the quiet assurance of your adoption become the bedrock of your confidence and the source of your Sabbath rest.

Prompt: Take time today to sit in silence; can you sense the Holy Spirit affirming your identity as a child of God?

Action Step: Sabbath rest gives us the quietness needed to hear the internal witness of the Holy Spirit.
