Reflecting on Grace

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect

Scripture: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: – Ephesians 2:8 (KJV)

Grace is the most counter-cultural message in history: you are saved not by what you do, but by what God has done. This truth is the ultimate relief for the human soul, which is constantly pressured by the world to perform, earn, and prove its worth. When we meditate on the fact that salvation is a gift, we are finally set free from the crushing weight of trying to be ‘enough.’ We are enough because of Him, and that is a settled reality.

As you rest let go of the need to be productive to be valuable. Your Sabbath rest is a picture of the finished work of Christ; just as He finished the work of salvation you can finish your week knowing that your standing with God is secure. Breathe in His grace today. Let it be the silence that replaces your striving and the peace that replaces your performance. You are loved chosen, and sustained by the gift of God.

Prompt: As you rest today, how does meditating on the unearned gift of God's grace relieve you from the pressure of performance?

Action Step: Sabbath rest is the perfect time to cease our striving and simply bask in the grace of God.
