Reflecting on Forgiveness
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect
Scripture: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. – Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)
Forgiveness is the ultimate test of our understanding of grace. We find it easy to judge others, yet we desperately crave mercy for ourselves. Ephesians 4:32 reminds us that our standard for forgiveness is not the other person’s behavior, but God’s grace toward us for Christ’s sake. If we refuse to forgive, we are essentially saying that our grievance is larger than the blood of Jesus. Forgiveness doesn’t mean the offense wasn’t real; it means you are choosing to release the debt because you have already been forgiven for so much more.
Use this time of rest to search your heart. Is there a person or a memory that still triggers bitterness? Lay that burden down at the feet of the Cross today. Forgiveness is a path to your own freedom—it releases you from the prison of resentment. Ask God to give you a ‘tender heart’ toward those who have wronged you, just as He had a tender heart toward you while you were still His enemy.
Prompt: As you rest today, is there any unforgiveness in your heart that needs to be released in light of God’s grace to you?
Action Step: Sabbath rest is an opportunity to clear our hearts of bitterness, reflecting on the profound forgiveness we have received in Christ.
