Purity of Mind and Body
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Equip
Scripture: Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. – Philippians 4:8
We are what we consume mentally and spiritually. Our minds are the gatekeepers of our souls, and Philippians 4:8 provides the criteria for what should pass through that gate. In an age of endless digital distraction, we often mindlessly consume media that is far from ‘pure’ or ‘lovely,’ unaware of how it subtly reshapes our desires and dulls our spiritual sensitivity. Purity is not just about avoiding evil; it is about actively filling our minds with the things that are virtuous and praiseworthy.
Take an honest audit of your media intake. Do the things you watch read and listen to lead your thoughts toward Christ or do they pull you away into cynicism lust, or comparison? If you find your mind cluttered with ‘rubbish,’ commit to a detox. Replace those habits with things that are true and honest. By carefully choosing your inputs, you protect your heart and ensure that your mind remains a place where the Holy Spirit can dwell without hindrance.
Prompt: Are the things you watch, read, and listen to helping you keep a pure mind?
Action Step: Spiritual training requires guarding our senses to protect our hearts and minds from corruption.
Next Step: Take an inventory of your media consumption today and filter it through Philippians 4:8.
