Praying the Scriptures
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice
Scripture: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12
We often approach prayer by bringing our own limited vocabulary and wandering thoughts to God. While He hears those prayers, there is a distinct power in praying the Scriptures. When you pray God’s Word, you are praying His will, His promises, and His language back to Him. You are aligning your heart with the ‘two-edged sword’ of truth, which cuts through our confusion and centers our requests on what truly matters to the Father. Praying the Bible turns our conversations with God into an echo of His own heart.
Choose a passage today—perhaps a psalm of praise or a prayer from the letters of Paul—and turn it into your own prayer. As you read, pause, and insert your name or your current situation into the verse. You will find that the words of Scripture have a way of expanding your vision and deepening your faith. By praying the Word, you ensure that you are talking to God on His terms, which is the surest way to experience the power of the Gospel in your daily life.
