Prayer of Examen
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice
Scripture: Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. – Psalm 139:23-24
We live in a world of constant noise and impulsive reaction, where our thoughts often wander into dark places before we even realize it. The Prayer of Examen is the vital practice of stopping to invite God into our internal landscape. By asking Him to ‘search our hearts’ and ‘try our thoughts,’ we allow the Holy Spirit to act as a mirror, revealing the motives and attitudes that we are too close to see for ourselves. This is not about self-condemnation, but about alignment with the ‘way everlasting.’
Make it a habit to pause today and open your mind to the Lord. As you review your day ask Him to pinpoint where your thoughts drifted away from His truth. When He reveals a ‘wicked way’—a moment of pride envy or bitterness—don’t run from it. Confess it immediately receive His forgiveness, and ask Him to reset your heart. This simple practice of consistent self-examination is what keeps our spirits tender and our paths straight.
Prompt: How often do you pause to ask God to examine your thoughts, motives, and actions?
Action Step: Practicing the prayer of Examen helps us maintain a sensitive conscience and close communion with God.
Next Step: Spend 10 minutes tonight reflecting on your day, asking God to highlight moments of grace and areas of sin.
