Perseverance
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE
Scripture: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, – Hebrews 12:1
The Christian life is a marathon, not a sprint, and Hebrews 12:1 reminds us that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses who have successfully finished their race. Perseverance is not merely about gritting our teeth and enduring; it is about actively laying aside the weights and sins that entangle our hearts and slow our progress. Often, our exhaustion stems not just from the difficulty of the path, but from carrying burdens that God never intended for us to bear, such as perfectionism, guilt, or the pursuit of worldly approval.
To keep going when the journey feels long we must fix our eyes on the Author and Finisher of our faith. By surrendering our own strength and acknowledging our dependence on His grace we find the renewal necessary to keep running. Every setback is an invitation to cast off another weight and rely more fully on His sustaining power. Remember that you are not running alone; the same grace that empowered the saints of old is available to you today to help you finish your race with patience.
Prompt: What helps you keep going when your faith journey feels difficult and exhausting?
Action Step: The SHAPE process emphasizes that perseverance is required to fully develop the character of Christ in our lives.
Next Step: Identify one weight or distraction that is slowing you down spiritually and ask God for help to lay it aside today.
