Overcoming Spiritual Dryness

Scripture: O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; – Psalm 63:1
Spiritual dryness is not necessarily a sign of God’s absence; often, it is a wilderness season designed to intensify our longing for Him. David, in Psalm 63, did not wait for the rain to fall before he sought the Lord; he sought Him because of the thirst. When you feel parched, the worst thing you can do is withdraw. Instead, press into the spiritual disciplines even when you don’t ‘feel’ anything. Consistency in prayer and the Word, even during a drought, acts as the pipe that keeps the connection open for the Spirit’s return.
Today, if your spirit feels dry, be honest with God about it. Use your thirst as a prayer. Tell Him exactly how you feel, and then commit to seeking Him ‘early’—before the distractions of the day take over. Spiritual dryness is often the place where our deepest reliance on God is forged. Don’t look for an emotional high; look for the God who promises to satisfy the soul that sincerely seeks Him in the desert.
Prompt: What steps can you take when you feel like you are in a ‘dry and thirsty land’ spiritually?
Action Step: Spiritual training involves learning how to persevere and seek God even when we don’t ‘feel’ His presence.
Next Step: Acknowledge your spiritual dryness to God and ask Him to refresh your soul.
