Overcoming Anxiety

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE

Scripture: Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. – Philippians 4:6 (KJV)

Anxiety is often a symptom of trying to carry tomorrow’s burdens with today’s strength. Paul’s instruction is a prescription: move from ‘being careful’ (anxious) to ‘making requests known’—but the key ingredient is thanksgiving. When we stop and thank God for His past faithfulness, it recalibrates our perspective on our present worries. It acknowledges that the God who sustained us yesterday is the same God who is already in our tomorrow.

Take your specific anxiety today—a looming deadline, a relationship struggle, or a financial question—and name it before God. Then list three things He has done for you that prove His love. By sandwiching your request between gratitude and confidence, you stop the cycle of panic and begin to operate in the peace of God, which guards your heart. Prayer with thanksgiving isn’t just a religious ritual; it’s the antidote to a mind spiraling out of control.
