Orphan and Widow Care

Scripture: Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. – James 1:27 (KJV)
James defines ‘pure religion’ not by our doctrines or our experiences, but by our engagement with the brokenness of the world. Caring for the fatherless and widows is an act of defiance against the world’s indifference. God is the Father to the fatherless and the Defender of widows; when we care for them, we are representing Him on earth. This is a primary way we stay ‘unspotted’ from the world—by keeping our hearts focused on His mission rather than our own convenience.
Look at your community today: who is vulnerable? It might be a single parent, a neighbor living alone, or a foster child in need of advocacy. Christianity that remains in our heads is ineffective; it must reach our hands. Take one concrete step today to ‘visit’ or support someone in their affliction. Let your life be a tangible expression of the compassion of Christ.
Prompt: How are you tangibly demonstrating the heart of God by caring for the vulnerable in your community?
Action Step: Sharing the Gospel means our faith must move into action, specifically prioritizing those who cannot repay us.
Next Step: Research a local foster care agency, orphanage, or nursing home and ask how you can help.
