Night Watches/Vigils

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word. – Psalm 119:148 (KJV)

Nighttime can be a lonely place where the mind tends to replay the day’s failures or rehearse the next day’s anxieties. The Psalmist, however, used these quiet, dark hours for a different purpose: he used them to meet with God. By ‘preventing the night watches’—getting up before the dawn—he prioritized meditation over misery. When you wake in the night, your first instinct is often to worry; let your new instinct be to worship.

The next time you find yourself awake while the world sleeps, treat it as a divine invitation rather than a physical inconvenience. Keep a Bible or a devotional near your bed. As soon as those worried thoughts begin, turn them into prayers. Use the quiet to pour your heart out to the One who neither slumbers nor sleeps. You will find that these midnight meetings can become the most peaceful part of your day.

Prompt: How can you use times of wakefulness during the night to seek God rather than worry?

Action Step: The Practice of prayer during the night watches builds spiritual intimacy and focus when the world is quiet.

Next Step: If you wake up during the night this week, spend 10 minutes in prayer before going back to sleep.
