Love for Enemies
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE
Scripture: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; – Matthew 5:44 (KJV)
Loving our enemies is arguably the most difficult command in Scripture because it runs entirely contrary to our natural instincts of self-preservation and justice. Yet, it is the defining mark of a disciple. To pray for those who persecute us is not to excuse their actions; it is to release our desire for vengeance into the hands of the only Judge who is perfectly fair. When you pray for your adversary, you are asking God to break the power of bitterness in your own heart and to extend His mercy toward a soul that is desperately lost.
Today, name that person who causes you irritation, anger, or hurt. Commit to praying for them—not for their downfall, but for their encounter with the love of God. By choosing to bless them, you take a step into the radical, transforming love of Christ, proving that your heart is being governed not by your circumstances, but by the Spirit.
Prompt: Who is someone you consider an ‘enemy’ or adversary that you need to start praying for today?
Action Step: SHAPE focuses on transforming our hearts to reflect Christ’s radical love, even toward those who oppose us.
Next Step: Write down the name of someone who has wronged you and commit to praying for their blessing this week.
