Lectio Divina

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. – Psalm 119:15

In our fast-paced culture, we are trained to consume information quickly, often prioritizing volume over depth. Lectio Divina, or ‘divine reading,’ is an ancient practice that invites us to slow down, read a short passage of Scripture repeatedly, and allow the Holy Spirit to transform the text from information into a prayerful encounter. By lingering on a single verse, we move from just reading about God to communing with Him. It is the difference between scanning a map and actually walking the path.

Try this practice today: pick a small passage like Psalm 119:15. Read it once slowly listening for a word that stands out. Read it again asking God what He wants you to see. Read it a third time turning those words into a conversation with the Father. By moving at a slower pace, you allow the Word of God to penetrate your heart more deeply than a hurried reading ever could. Let today be a day of quality, not quantity, in your study.

Prompt: How often do you read the Bible slowly, pausing to listen to what God might be speaking to your heart?

Action Step: Practicing Lectio Divina (divine reading) moves us from merely reading for information to reading for transformation.

Next Step: Take 5 minutes to slowly read a short Psalm three times, asking God to highlight one word or phrase for you.
