Humility
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE
Scripture: Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. – Philippians 2:3 (KJV)
Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. In a culture driven by ‘vainglory’ and self-promotion, the call to esteem others better than ourselves is a radical, counter-cultural act of love. True humility recognizes that our talents, successes, and even our spiritual gifts are not for our own glory, but are tools granted by God to serve the body. When we operate in this lowliness of mind, we become channels for His grace rather than obstacles to His work.
Identify where your ego still demands center stage—perhaps in your need to be right your desire for recognition or your reluctance to serve behind the scenes. Ask the Holy Spirit to cultivate a servant’s heart within you today. By intentionally putting others’ needs before your own you align yourself with the attitude of Christ who humbled Himself to the point of death, and you open the door for God’s power to work through you more effectively.
Prompt: What area of your life requires more humility today?
Action Step: SHAPE involves examining our character to reflect the humility of Christ.
Next Step: Identify one situation where you can intentionally put someone else's needs before your own.
