Humility as a Core Virtue
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Equip
Scripture: Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. – Philippians 2:3 (KJV)
Strife and vainglory are the enemies of a united, Christ-like life. We live in a ‘selfie’ culture that demands we constantly curate our reputation and insist on our own way. Biblical humility, however, is the radical choice to ‘esteem others better’—not because they are perfect, but because we recognize that we are called to be servants. When we stop trying to build our own platforms, we are finally free to build up the people around us.
Examine your motivations today: are you working for applause or for Christ? Is your primary goal to be ‘right’ or to be ‘relational’? True humility isn’t thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less. Ask God to show you where your ego is blocking His light, and then choose to serve someone today without expectation of recognition. Watch how this shift in focus brings peace to your spirit and unity to your relationships.
Prompt: In what areas of your life are you seeking your own glory rather than elevating the needs of others?
Action Step: The Equip module trains us to adopt the mindset of Christ, whose ultimate strength was demonstrated through supreme humility.
Next Step: Intentionally let someone else take the credit or go first in a situation today.
