Grieving with Hope
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE
Scripture: But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. – 1 Thessalonians 4:13 (KJV)
Grief is an inevitable part of living in a fallen world, but for the believer, it is never a dead-end street. Paul’s instruction to not ‘sorrow as others which have no hope’ doesn’t mean we don’t feel pain; it means our pain is anchored in a different reality. Because Christ conquered the grave, we grieve with the knowledge that death is not the final word. Every goodbye is temporary for those whose lives are hidden in Him.
When you face loss, allow yourself to feel the weight of it, but constantly invite the Holy Spirit to lift your eyes to the eternal horizon. Your current sorrow is heavy, but it is not eternal. Let the promise of the resurrection turn your grief into a testament of the hope you possess. By grieving with hope, you bear witness to a world that is desperate for the comfort that only the Gospel can provide.
Prompt: How does the promise of eternal life change the way you process current losses and grief?
Action Step: SHAPE focuses on emotional health and navigating life’s deepest sorrows with the anchor of biblical hope.
Next Step: Spend time in prayer, yielding a specific area of grief or loss to the Lord’s comfort.
