Generosity of Spirit

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE

Scripture: The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. – Proverbs 11:25

A generous spirit is the outward reflection of a heart that understands it is not the owner of its blessings, but a steward of God’s grace. Proverbs 11:25 contains a divine paradox: we are enriched by what we give away. When we live with a ‘slack hand,’ holding onto our time, money, and energy out of a spirit of scarcity, we actually stunt our own spiritual growth. Conversely, when we actively look for ways to ‘water’ others, we find that the life of Christ flows through us and refreshes our own souls in the process.

Today look for an opportunity to be ‘liberal’ in your generosity. It might mean giving a colleague your time offering a helping hand to a neighbor or being extravagantly kind to someone who doesn’t expect it. Don’t worry about depletion; God’s resources are infinite. By adopting a posture of generosity you break the power of greed and self-protection, positioning yourself to be watered by the very Spirit who gave everything for you.

Prompt: How can you display a more generous spirit with your time and resources today?

Action Step: A generous spirit reflects the heart of God and opens the door for His abundant blessings.
