Fleeing Temptation
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE
Scripture: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)
Temptation is rarely a sudden assault; it is an invitation to doubt God’s goodness. The promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13 is that God is faithful—He is already working to provide a way out. The ‘escape’ is often simple but requires immediate action: changing your environment, reciting a promise from Scripture, or reaching out to a mentor. We often fail because we linger near the temptation instead of fleeing it.
Don’t negotiate with your desires today. If you feel the pull, immediately acknowledge it and pivot to the escape route God has provided. Pray for the Holy Spirit to alert you before the temptation becomes overwhelming. Your victory is not found in your own willpower to endure but in your humble obedience to take the path God has already cleared for you.
Prompt: What is your immediate response when you feel the pull of temptation, and do you look for the escape route God promises?
Action Step: The SHAPE module teaches that personal holiness requires actively fleeing from sinful desires and relying on God’s strength.
Next Step: Identify one recurring temptation and map out a specific ‘escape plan’ for the next time it arises.
