Fasting from Words
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice
Scripture: He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. – Proverbs 17:27 (KJV)
We live in a culture that rewards the ‘quick reply,’ often at the expense of wisdom. Proverbs reminds us that the mark of an excellent spirit is the ability to spare our words—to hold back the impulsive comment, the quick jab, or the unnecessary opinion. Every word we speak is a seed that will eventually bear fruit; if we speak rashly, we reap a harvest of discord. If we speak with intentionality and grace, we sow seeds of life and understanding.
Today, practice the spiritual discipline of silence before you speak. When you find yourself in a conversation, pause. Ask yourself: ‘Is what I am about to say necessary? Is it kind? Does it glorify God?’ By curbing your tongue, you create space for the Holy Spirit to guide your speech, ensuring that your words bring healing rather than hurt. Silence is often the most profound expression of an excellent spirit.
Prompt: How often do you speak impulsively rather than pausing to consider if your words are necessary and helpful?
Action Step: The Practice of spiritual disciplines includes learning to control our tongues, creating space to listen to God and others.
Next Step: Commit to practicing silence for one hour today, speaking only if absolutely necessary.
