Fasting for Others

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us. – Ezra 8:23 (KJV)

Fasting is an act of spiritual intensity, a way of signaling to our own souls—and to God—that we are serious about seeking His intervention. When we fast for others, we are physically demonstrating that their breakthrough matters more to us than our own immediate comfort. Ezra’s example shows us that fasting is a powerful tool to bring us into alignment with God’s will, preparing our hearts to receive His answers and His grace on behalf of those we love.

Is there someone whose situation feels stuck or insurmountable? Choose to set aside a meal (or the entire day) to focus on fasting and prayer specifically for them. Use that hunger to drive you back to the Word and to deep intercession. You aren’t ‘convincing’ God to care; you are positioning your own heart to trust Him more fully for their restoration. Let your hunger today be a prayer for their spiritual breakthrough.

Prompt: Who is someone in desperate need of a breakthrough that you can willingly fast and pray for today?

Action Step: Practice disciplines like fasting can be directed outwardly as a powerful form of intercession for the needs of others.

Next Step: Skip one meal today and use that time to pray fervently for a friend’s specific need.
