Fasting for Direction

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. – Acts 13:2 (KJV)

The early church didn’t make major decisions in a vacuum; they made them in the presence of God, punctuated by fasting. Fasting acts as a ‘volume knob’—it turns down the noise of our own desires and the distractions of the world so that we can clearly hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. When we are facing a fork in the road, fasting is a way of saying to God, ‘I want Your will more than I want my next meal or my own comfort.’

What is that decision weighing on you right now? Career changes, relationship shifts, or ministry opportunities—bring them to the altar. Set aside time today to fast and seek His face specifically about this issue. Don’t rush into a conclusion. Sit in the silence, open your heart to His guidance, and trust that He is a Father who loves to direct the paths of those who truly seek Him.

Prompt: What major decision are you facing that requires you to seek God’s direction through prayer and fasting?

Action Step: The Practice of fasting demonstrates our dependence on God and tunes our spiritual ears to hear the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Next Step: Identify a specific day this week to fast a meal and seek God’s will for an upcoming decision.
