Fasting for Breakthrough

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. – Ezra 8:21

Fasting is more than the absence of food; it is the presence of an intentional, desperate hunger for the will of God. When we deny the flesh, we signal to our own souls that we prioritize His direction over our own comfort. Ezra understood that the safety of his people and the success of his mission could not be achieved by human strategy alone. He needed the ‘right way’ from the Lord. Fasting creates a spiritual vacuum that allows us to hear His voice with newfound clarity and focus.

Identify the situation today where you feel stuck or uncertain. Is it a wayward child, a complex vocational decision, or a stagnant area of your ministry? Proclaim a personal fast—even if it is small—and commit that time to seeking His face. As you set aside your physical appetite, let your heart cry out for the spiritual breakthrough you need. God delights in those who are humble enough to ask for His direction, and He is faithful to lead those who seek Him with all their heart.

Prompt: What area of your life or ministry desperately needs God’s direction or a spiritual breakthrough?

Action Step: Fasting demonstrates our deep dependence on God and intensifies our prayers when seeking His guidance.
