Extended Fasting
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice
Scripture: And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. – Matthew 4:2
Jesus’ wilderness fast was a prerequisite for His ministry, signaling that He was powered not by the appetites of the flesh, but by the Word of God. He entered the desert to strip away every distraction and rely entirely on the Father’s sustaining grace. For us, extended fasting is a way of saying that the Kingdom of God is more important than our daily physical comfort. It is a time of spiritual ‘zero-sum’—denying the belly to satisfy the soul, and clearing the clutter to hear the voice of the Father with absolute clarity.
You may not be called to forty days but are you called to a season of deeper consecration? Extended fasting is a tool for spiritual breakthrough. It humbles the flesh sharpens our spiritual senses and humbles us before the Father. As you consider your current walk ask if there is an area that requires this deeper level of surrender. Fasting prepares us for the work God is calling us to, ensuring that when the time comes to step out in ministry, we are walking in His strength, not our own.
