Enjoying Hobbies
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Rest & Reflect
Scripture: And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God. – Ecclesiastes 3:13 (KJV)
We are created not just to work, but to enjoy the life that God provides. Ecclesiastes reminds us that even our leisure—the things we eat, drink, and the work of our hands—is a gift to be received with thanksgiving. There is a tendency in our culture to view everything through the lens of productivity, but hobbies are a way of acknowledging that we are more than what we produce. Engaging in wholesome hobbies can be an act of worship, reflecting the creativity of the God who made us.
What brings you joy? Is it gardening, reading, building something, or playing an instrument? Don’t view these as ‘wasted time.’ They are gifts. Spend time today engaging in an activity that refreshes your soul and reminds you of God’s goodness. By enjoying the good of your labor, you are living out the freedom of being God’s child, rather than the slave of a schedule.
Prompt: Do you allow yourself time to enjoy wholesome hobbies and activities as a gift from God?
Action Step: Sabbath rest includes engaging in joyful, re-creative activities that refresh our minds and spirits outside of our normal work.
