Engaging Secular Culture

Scripture: Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. – Matthew 5:13 (KJV)
Salt was the primary preservative of the ancient world, meant to keep corruption at bay and add zest to life. As the ‘salt of the earth,’ we are called to be an active, positive influence in our secular culture—not by withdrawing from it in fear, but by engaging it with the truth and grace of the Gospel. If our lives are indistinguishable from the world, we have lost our savor and our ability to effect the change that God intends for us to bring.
How are you influencing your workplace, your school, or your social circles today? Are you bringing the ‘flavor’ of Christ’s love and truth to those environments? Your integrity, your speech, and your acts of service are the ways you preserve the truth in a decaying culture. Don’t shrink back from your calling. Be the influence God created you to be; it is the most essential work you can do for those around you.
Prompt: Are you actively preserving and flavoring the secular culture around you with the truth of the Gospel?
Action Step: Sharing our faith requires us to engage the culture without losing our distinct, Christ-like flavor.
Next Step: Identify one secular environment you frequent and pray for an opportunity to be ‘salt’ there today.
