Endurance

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE

Scripture: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, – Hebrews 12:1

The Christian life is not a sprint; it is a marathon that requires both persistence and intentional preparation. To run effectively, we cannot carry unnecessary baggage. Hebrews 12:1 distinguishes between ‘sins’—which are obvious obstacles—and ‘weights,’ which are things that might be permissible but still hinder our pace. A weight could be an over-commitment, an unhealthy obsession, or a distraction that consumes the energy intended for our spiritual growth. Endurance is found when we declutter our lives to focus on the finish line set before us.

Take an honest look at your current pace. Is your spirit feeling sluggish or weary? It is likely time to shed the weights you have been holding. Ask the Lord to show you what is preventing you from running at your full potential. Laying aside these distractions is an act of faith acknowledging that the prize of knowing Christ is far more valuable than the things you are leaving behind. Run with patience today unburdened and focused on the Savior.

Prompt: What “weights” or distractions do you need to lay aside today to run your spiritual race with endurance?

Action Step: Our SHAPE is refined through endurance as we consistently choose to follow Christ despite obstacles.

Next Step: Identify one specific distraction you can remove today to focus more fully on God.
