Embracing Spiritual Accountability

Scripture: Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. – Proverbs 27:17
We all have blind spots—areas of our character or behavior that we are simply unable to see on our own. Spiritual growth is rarely a solitary endeavor; it requires the ‘sharpening’ that comes from the honest, sometimes difficult input of others. A true friend is not one who always affirms our current path, but one who cares enough about our holiness to point out the dull edges in our lives. If you have no one who can say ‘no’ to you, or who can challenge your motives, you are vulnerable to stagnation.
Do you have someone in your life who has explicit permission to hold you accountable? If not pray for God to bring such a person into your circle. If you do have such a person reach out to them this week and invite their feedback. When iron sharpens iron there can be friction but the end result is a life that is sharper, stronger, and more effective for the Kingdom. Embrace this sharpening today as a vital component of your discipleship.
Prompt: Who in your life has permission to speak difficult truths to you for your spiritual growth?
Action Step: Spiritual accountability is the necessary friction that God uses to refine our character and keep us sharp.
Next Step: Reach out to a trusted Christian friend today and ask them how they see you growing spiritually.
