Disaster Relief

Scripture: Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. – Proverbs 3:27
In the wake of disaster, the church is called to be the ‘hands and feet’ of Jesus, offering not just relief, but hope. Proverbs 3:27 reminds us that if we have the power to do good, we must not withhold it. Disaster relief is a profound opportunity to witness to the Gospel through radical, tangible compassion. When we show up to clear debris, provide food, or offer comfort to the hurting, we are embodying the truth that God is ‘a very present help in trouble’ (Psalm 46:1). Our presence is often the first glimpse of His love a victim sees.
How can your local church be prepared to serve before the next crisis hits? Start by fostering a culture of generosity and readiness. When disaster strikes, be the first to reach out with both physical aid and spiritual care. Don’t just wait for a formal invitation; look for the ‘good’ you have the power to do today. By responding to crisis with love and diligence, the church proves that it is more than just a gathering on Sunday—it is a community defined by sacrificial service.
Prompt: How should the church respond when a community is devastated by a natural or unexpected disaster?
Action Step: Sharing the love of Christ often looks like showing up to help rebuild lives in moments of absolute crisis.
Next Step: Pray for communities recently affected by disasters and the relief workers serving them.
