Detachment from Possessions
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice
Scripture: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: – Matthew 6:19
Possessions have a unique way of possessing us if we are not careful. We often equate our security with our bank accounts and our status with our belongings, but these treasures are ultimately fragile and temporal. Jesus calls us to a radical detachment—not because material things are inherently evil, but because our hearts were designed to be anchored in the eternal. Holding onto things too tightly blinds us to the needs of the Kingdom and keeps us in a perpetual state of anxiety over what might be lost.
Take an inventory of your heart today. Ask yourself what you would be devastated to lose. If your identity is tied up in your clothes your gadgets or your home it may be time to loosen your grip. Practice generosity as a way of breaking the power of materialism. When we give freely we declare that our true treasure is not in the things that corrupt, but in the God who provides. Release your tight hold, and find the freedom that comes from trusting in His eternal supply.
Prompt: How tightly are you holding onto your material possessions today?
Action Step: Practicing detachment frees our hearts to pursue heavenly treasures rather than earthly comfort.
Next Step: Take an inventory of your possessions and identify one thing you can give away.
