Defeating Pride
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: SHAPE
Scripture: Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. – Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)
Pride is the root sin that whispers the lie that we are the architects of our own destiny and the masters of our own success. It is a subtle form of idolatry where we place our own wisdom and capability above the sovereign will of the Almighty. When we cling to self-sufficiency, we block the flow of God’s grace, as He resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Take time today to identify the areas where you are gripping the steering wheel of your life with white knuckles. True strength is not found in autonomy but in total surrender to the One who holds all things together. Yielding control to God is an act of worship that acknowledges your dependence on Him, inviting His peace to replace the anxiety that inevitably follows a haughty spirit.
Prompt: In what area of your life are you struggling to yield control to God due to a sense of self-sufficiency?
Action Step: The SHAPE section emphasizes that holiness requires ongoing submission and the rooting out of destructive pride.
Next Step: Identify one area where you have been overly self-reliant and confess it to God in prayer.
